George Harrison’s iconic 1967 sunglasses were worn by George on the cover of the Revolver album. He eventually stopped wearing the round glasses and began wearing heart-shaped lenses. Here’s the reason why…

George and Patti Harrison fly to Los Angeles

TUESDAY, 1 AUGUST 1967

I remember, it was on this day when George and Pattie Harrison, Alexis “Magic Alex” Mardas and Neil Aspinall flew from London to Los Angeles. That’s when I met George. I was so fortunate to meet him and in an act of kindness, George personally handed me his sunglasses!

[It was also on this day that George wrote the song “Blue Jay Way” while waiting for his friends to arrive after landing in Los Angeles. Click here if you want to learn more about that story.]

After their stay in Los Angeles, George and Pattie, along with the rest of their entourage, decided to fly up to San Francisco. Pattie’s sister, Jennie Boyd, was living in the city at the time, and it gave the group an opportunity to visit the increasingly famous “Hippy Heaven” area of Haight Ashbury.

Because George had given me his sunglasses, he had to purchase another pair. That’s when the heart shaped sunglasses came into play.

As fate would have it, I became friends with George, visiting with him on several occasions and even staying at his home, Friar Park estate, a 120-room neo-Gothic mansion (which he referred to as Crackerbox Palace), where I assisted Gary Wright in recording keyboard phrases on George’s new album.

One evening during a saké and sushi dinner with Gary Wright, George Harrison, producer Russ Titelman and myself, I thought it would be fun to bring along the sunglasses that George had given me eleven years earlier. We reminisced about those days, had a few laughs and a few more sakés.
